These are the "things" that make people cringe - the stereotypes. The cliches. The things you DON'T WANT TO HAVE.

Male:
1) The bad boy – He’s really tough, usually aloof and pushes people away. Few people actually get the “honor” of getting to know him. He usually has a secret past.
2) The adorkable dude – He’s upbeat and smiley, even though he’s just regarded as average or even a loser by the world. He has a heart of gold and is often the main hero of stories
3) The nerdy dude – Whether getting good grades is in or out, he never fails to get the GPA, do all the research, and ask questions in class. He’s usually into science or math.
4) The jock dude – He can play every sport known to man and be good at it too. He also watches sports, drinks Gatorade, and is a chick magnet for no apparent reason.
5) The weird dude – He’s usually into a lot of random nonconformist music, and believes in aliens and possibly karma. He could be completely superstitious, usually quiet.
6) The insane dude – He has this untamable force of energy. He can’t sit still. He might do something like setting a building on fire just because he didn’t get an ice cream.
7) The emo dude – He is sad because of something that happened in his past, either a mistake he made or something which was completely out of his hands, but he’s still sad.
8) The evil dude – He believes that everyone must die, and if not that then he must be in control of everyone. There’s a reason for this too. Usually it’s a twisted form of reality.
9) The idiot/class clown – He is very foolish and would do anything to get a laugh. All that he needs is an audience who instigates and he becomes infallibly confident.
10) The punk/rebel dude – He is hardcore, jamming to music in the hallways, and when an authority figure tells him to do something he’ll purposely do the opposite for no reason.
11) The sloth dude – He sleeps in class, never does his homework, and he has absolutely no plans for after high school, that is, if he hasn’t dropped out of high school yet.
12) The player – He is God’s gift to women. His hair is perfect, he rocks whatever new clothing is hot, and he flirts incessantly. He’s always got a girlfriend, or two, or three.
13) The religious dude – He is always praying and trying to be a man of God, he’s gentlemanly and respectful, very careful about what he says, despite his past he tries to lead well and has hope.
14) The hippie dude – It’s all about love and having fun, he wears a lot of tie-dye and jeans, and smiles a lot with eyes half open, he doesn’t try very hard, and he can make other people laugh.
15) The fat dude – He doesn’t care about appearances at all, his eyes are bigger than his stomach but that won’t stop him, he usually has very boring hair and squishy cheeks and a jelly belly.
16) The cowboy – He wears a fedora and jeans and boots, usually strong with a southern accent, rides a horse, knows how to take care of a farm, rustic, and maybe carries a gun and can shoot

Female:
1) The preppy chick – She is awesome, a cheerleader, maybe a dancer or karate student. She sits at the front of the class, and is friends with or knows everyone in the entire school.
2) The kickbutt chick – She doesn’t take any nonsense. A strong will and an independent mind will take her far, if fighting is what she wants to do, because she’s good at it.
3) The nerdy chick – She gets the grade and asks questions in class. She’s the first to be picked if someone needs a study partner. She is self-conscious because of peer pressure.
4) The jock chick – She’s into sports, whether it means to play them or to watch. She’s usually regarded as cool by the guys and has a lot of friends in high places.
5) The weird chick – She is the picture of nonconformity. People usually don’t like her. Most can’t even understand her. But those with an open mind will at least appreciate her.
6) The insane chick – She has that laugh which can crack glass, and she’s usually into something life-threatening or adrenalin-inspiring like fire or bungee-jumping. She has no fear.
7) The emo chick – She has constant PMS. Those who meet her at first get sucked into her sob story and feel for her, but eventually they just get annoyed with her because she is always PMS-ing.
8) The goth chick – She thinks everything is black, and death is more awesome than life. She is somewhat emotionless, difficult to scare, and a bit of a loner. Usually very self-righteous too.
9) The brainless chick – She takes forever to get jokes. Oftentimes, she’s a blonde. She laughs a lot to try and distract people from the fact that there’s nothing going on upstairs.
10) The punk/rebel chick – She needs her jam time every once and awhile. Usually she’ll wear chains and carry around headphones, and her hobbies include talking back to teachers.
11) The tomboy – She hates makeup, usually likes sports, but is not as cool as the jocks. The tomboy usually holds a grudge against something that would make her girly and is often regarded as ugly.
12) The shy chick – She is the random chick nobody knows, usually sitting in the middle of the classroom. She doesn’t talk and looks down a lot, and if she is put on the spot she’ll freeze.
13) The religious chick – She stays out of trouble, usually kind and caring, helpful, upbeat and happy in a variety of ways, usually sits at the front of the class and tries to make friends.
14) The hippie chick – She’s a vegetarian or vegan, all about love and peace, usually mellow in personality, really strange, somewhat nonconformist, likes old rock, and wears tie-dye and colors.
15) The fat chick – She knows it’s eat or be eaten and she likes to gorge herself, bulimia might be an issue with her, she may have low self-esteem, she could be dieting or already have given up.
16) The cowgirl – She has a southern accent, can ride horses, free-spirited, usually likes animals, cowgirl boots, can cook, hard worker, strong spirit, and helps out on the farm.
Originally titled "guide to (stereotypical) personality archetypes".

I thought it would be fun to list as many stereotypes as I could. Let me know If I missed one and I'll see if I can add it or tell you which type it would fall under :)
So tell me what you think of this! I don't usually make guides for my stuff. But I thought this might help you guys when creating characters :) Of course its good to mix and match some times but try to stick to a certain area of the type of character cuz if you dabble in too many things you might end up with a mary sue, and no one wants to see that.

That's because it's me...though to be honest, "Autistic Manchild" IS quickly becoming a stereotype amongst some authors. Just go on to Encyclopedia Dramatica, or the bad webcomics wiki. Hell, just type in Autist, manchild or neckbeard, and you'll see what I mean.

eh i still dont see it and i consider myself pretty on the up and up. modern "stereotypes" kind of cycle in and out but this guide was made to show the lasting classics, the most well known and the most used. even if this type as you say becomes popular, there will still never be as many of them as, say, the "queen bee" preppy girl, because thats been a stereotype much longer and people havent really quit it

Kickbutt chick: 1/5
Punk/Rebel chick: 1/5
Shy chick: 1/12
Tomboy chick: 1/10
Pinch of Insane chick
35/60= defined characteristics, 25/60 undefined.
I'm not sure I really match the top two well. I don't necessarily kick butt, or go outright rebellious. I'm more prone to quiet disobedience, and the only way I fit into those categories is that when I perceive something as unfair, I tend to mention it, even if it is extremely unwise. It generally doesn't end well. Shy? In some situations. It could just be quiet, though. I'm not really certain. Tomboy: only by my family's standards, probably. Insane chic: Only the last sentence, where you say she feels no fear. I'm a bit insensitive to fear, which isn't necessarily a good thing.

I just saw my own comment here...I remember writing a classification of myself on this comment section, but for the life of me a have no idea what pikaapplechan means now. I even looked it up to see if I had been making a reference. Behold: the awesome power of nonsense words.
Actually usefully adding something, I've noticed a lot of these stereotypes in cartoons, and even several (multiple) in my writings. I should spy on this list every time I create a new character so I don't do that again! Usually mine wind up closest to the emo stereotype because I love putting characters through the wringer, but I'd better fix that!

Oops...I must've misinterpreted the comments. I'm not sure how close my characters have made it to those stereotypes, but I'd love to think none of them fitted entirely. As it is, are there any specific common stereotypes for 20-22 year-olds (especially those on the list)?

well the comments should be related to the post usually but some people for some reason have got the idea that this has to do with people when its about characters and stories. real people cant and dont fit into stereotypes easily usually because there is far more to who we are than could ever be recorded in a character bio. thats why i cant imagine why people tried to make this list about themselves ^^;

its fine. my guide could have been unclear about it too, idk. i just think of it as an obvious thing that there's a lot more to real people so it never occurred to me that people might try to make this about themselves

I have an idea: bitch chick - she is always mean for no reason and often has a small group of followers who approve of her behaviour. She isn't particularly smart, but tends to be very angry and bitchy when someone questions her inteligence. She can be classified as a bully, but more often she is just lost and needs someone to bitchslap-her-in-the-face-with-a-chair for a reality check.

though I wonder, where is the "political correctness" chick. She'd be probably also vegan and all about feminism (or her idea of it). She'd call everyone and everything going against her (or not working in her favour) a sexist or racist and would also blame the male part of society for it.

wow XD okay vegan could be anybody and feminism could go under anybody too though i might have to add that HOWEVER i would need some kind of male counterpart so that the numbers are even. i really can't stand those people who are sexist/racist/feminist but i have unfortunately met a few D:
